<description>What can a 130 year old science fiction novel teach us about human evolution, morality, artificial intelligence, and the future of humanity? In this video, I review H.G. Wells's The Time Machine (1895) and compare it to the 2002 film adaptation. While the book is a classic of science fiction, I argue that the movie explores some surprisingly interesting philosophical ideas. We begin with time travel and the unsettling realization that the past cannot be changed. From there, we explore the nature of objective reality, evolution viewed from the perspective of the future, and the eventual division of humanity into the Eloi and Morlocks. But the discussion doesn't stop there. The future society imagined by Wells raises questions that go back to Plato's Republic: What happens when humanity divides into distinct classes? Who should rule? And what happens when those with superior intelligence or power decide the fate of everyone else? These questions lead us into the intellectual climate of Wells's own time, when evolutionary theory and eugenics influenced how prominent thinkers imagined humanity's future. We also consider the moral consequences of a society that abandons God. Christianity teaches that every human being is made in the image of God, giving human life an inherent dignity that cannot be reduced to intelligence, strength, or usefulness. What happens when that foundation is removed? Finally, we connect these ideas to the present day, where influential technology leaders openly discuss artificial intelligence, transhumanism, and the possibility of merging humanity with machines. More than a century after its publication, The Time Machine still raises questions that we have yet to answer. Who decides what humanity should become? And by what moral authority?
